Abstract

These study is an essay resulting from the author’s reflection, analysis and professionalexperience in the field of School Inspection. It explains the type of revision it has undergonein the last years. Likewise, it describes approaches regarding the function of currentdemocratic societies, specifically, in the Spanish case.The three major evolutionary phases of this service along time are explained as well asits most important problems and challenges for the future. It points out the difficult relationsbetween the Education Inspectorate and the political power conferred to educationauthorities as the main problem to overcome; hence the repercussions of these relationson inspectors’ professional autonomy and on the sense and meaning of their functions.
