Abstract

During the academic course 1996-1997 the National Institute for Quality and Evaluation (INCE) has developed an evaluation of the educational system studying the levels in which the pupils were 14 and 16 years old. This study has been largely diffused through the mass media reflecting the big impact that it has had in educational environments.
This article overviews the antecedents of the study both, from a national and an international point of view. It describes also it’s general characteristics and some of the most relevant results that the five working commissions had reached concerning: educational outcomes, professional profile, curriculum, the functioning of the institutions and their relationships with society. The description of the aforementioned topics is combined with some critic reflections and comments.
