Challenges and complexities during school transition: A global problem with school solutions

Abstract

This article uses a mixed approach to analyse the complexities of educational transition from primary to secondary school, a process that significantly impacts students’ cognitive, emotional and social development. In Colombia, despite policies such as free access to education, the transition from 5th to 6th grade is marked by challenges that include school dropout, grade repetition and limited adaptability. The study analyses the perceptions of students in Medellín, and employs both qualitative and quantitative techniques – namely, a focus group and structured questionnaires – to identify key challenges. These include increased academic demands, students’ new roles, and changes in the school environment such as modified school schedules, a greater number of teachers and a heavier academic workload. Thematic coding was developed from a review of relevant literature and field experience in educational settings, which also guided the design of the data collection instruments. The findings underscore the importance of sustained support from teachers and families in facilitating a successful school transition. Additionally, the study examines international strategies aimed at improving transitional experiences, including preventive interventions, emotional support and social support mechanisms. These strategies are aligned with Colombia’s recent Law 2383 of 2024, which emphasizes emotional education in schools.
