The continuing education of mentally handicapped adults
Abstract
The 1950's concept of continuing education is perfectly applicable to the mentally handicaped adult. Achieving greater independence and an easier social integration. stand amongst its primary aims. Recent research in psychopedagogy has revealed the possibilities of a late education for the handicaped, whose performance tends to be regressive when not trained or stimulated. The main condition of continuing education for the mentally handicaped adult is the recognition of the fact that he is an adult, capable of choice and responsibility. Social integration is attained by the promotion and defense of valued social roles which may change societies attitudes and perceptions of the under vaiued person. A fundamental aspect of leisure is amusement, which indirectly contributes to continuing education. The authors have taken an example from an experience carried out in Geneva, Switzerland. Keywords
