Where are the children of immigrants from? The construction of identity and school
Abstract
The construction of identity is a complex process for the children of immigrants. These children often neither consider themselves as full citizens of the society they live in nor do they get to be considered as so by their host society. The aim of this article is to focus on the identity of these children and teenagers and on the function of school and teachers in its formation. We defend the construction of a plural identity, which is likewise rooted in the host society. We consider this as the most enriching option for both these people as well as for the society they live in. It is highly important that teachers operate meaningfully and appropriately in this process. Keywords
