Education and citizenship: A study on child and adolescent participation in the municipalities of Teo and Getafe
Abstract
This study explores child and adolescent citizen participation in two Spanish municipalities. It analyses the views of 34 children and adolescents involved in the Childhood and Adolescent Participation Commission in Getafe (Community of Madrid) and the Child and Adolescent Participation Forum in Teo (Galicia) to understand what importance they give to participation, what they learn, and the suggestions they propose to improve child and adolescent participation. A qualitative approach is employed, based on five discussion groups. The results show what participation means to the children and adolescents; how they understand the various skills they acquire, categorised into socio-personal and democratic skills and the issues addressed by participation in municipal bodies; and, based on their experiences, their suggestions for improving the visibility and civic involvement of children and adolescents in their municipalities, which are making the transition from adult-centric perspectives towards children and an increase in the prominence of spaces for their involvement. The conclusions highlight the civic skills and learning and sense of agency the children acquire from the participatory bodies.
