Author Guidelines

EDUCAR is an open-access scientific journal published by the Department of Applied Pedagogy of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) since 1982. The EDUCAR Journal aims to disseminate the results of educational research to promote and share them among the scientific community, professionals, and academics, as well as the public specialized in pedagogical issues.

EDUCAR publishes unpublished applied research articles (of quantitative and/or qualitative methodology) and theoretically based reviews focusing on current issues of an educational nature and from an interdisciplinary perspective in Catalan, English, and Spanish. The publication is biannual (January and July) and is structured in the following sections: Monograph and Research.

  • The Monograph section includes specialized works on the topic chosen in each issue. People interested in proposing and coordinating a monographic issue must submit the proposal following the instructions they will find in the "Submissions" section. The Editorial Committee will review the proposal and decide whether to accept or not the proposal. Equally, the final decision to accept an article proposed for the monograph section rests on the editorial team of the Journal and not on the coordinators of the Monograph.
  • The Research section collects work in the educational field of current interest, not necessarily linked to the monograph topic.

1. Presentation of monograph coordination proposals

All persons interested in proposing a monographic issue to EDUCAR must fill out and send a specific application form addressed to the Editorial Committee through the institutional email educa@uab.cat

Proposals will have to meet the following requirements:

  • Include the title proposed by the Monograph.
  • Enter the names and surnames, professional category, university, and email address of the person in charge of the Monograph (short resume, maximum 300 words per person).
  • It is necessary to consider that the Monograph must be coordinated by personnel with verifiable experience in the proposed field of study (maximum of 3 people). In addition, at least one of the coordinators must have a stable contract at their university.
  • If the monograph is coordinated by more than one person, they must belong to different institutions. It will be highly valued if at least one of these institutions is foreign.
  • Justify the interest and timeliness of the proposal presented and specify its connection with the educational field (maximum length: 500 words). Also, a description of the recipients of the proposal.
  • The international nature of the proposal will be highly valued, both in its approach and in the results it presents and in the authors who participate.
  • Include a list of 10 initial contributions that could be part of the monograph. They must be the result of research in the educational field, and their inclusion must be accompanied by possible topics or content to be developed.
  • It must be guaranteed that at least two articles are written in English.
  • No more than one contribution can be submitted per author and there cannot be more than two contributions from authors coming from the same institution.
  • It is necessary to include a list of a minimum of 10 possible experts on the topic of the monograph who can act as reviewers of the monograph articles. Some of the authors may be considered linked to the proposed contributions, but at least 80% must not be linked.
  • It must be guaranteed that the topic and contributions sent are not being evaluated nor have they been previously published in other journals or editorial media.

All contributions presented in the Monographic section will be subjected to the general review and evaluation process of the articles. The final decision to accept or reject a text proposed for the monographic section is the decision of the Editor and the Assistant editor, once the reports issued by the Scientific Committee have been analyzed; In no case will the people who coordinate a monograph issue related judgments in this regard.

2. Information required for submissions

4. Submission

Articles will be sent in Word or RTF format through the Open Journal System portal (https://educar.uab.cat/). No other means of delivery will be accepted nor will correspondence be maintained regarding originals not sent through the portal or in other formats.

5. Review criteria

The articles submitted must be unpublished and cannot be submitted to other journals for consideration once they are in the evaluation process to EDUCAR.

Reception of articles. Its reception will be acknowledged and, subsequently, the Editor and the Assistant Editor of the Journal will carry out a first editorial assessment consisting of checking: a) the suitability to the thematic field and the interest of the article based on the editorial criteria of the Journal, and b) compliance of the formal presentation requirements demanded in the publication standards (authors’ guidelines).

Format and presentation errors, non-compliance with the journal's rules or incorrect spelling and syntax may be grounds for rejecting the work without subjecting it to peer review. The reception and evaluation of the article do not imply its acceptance.

Article review. The articles submitted must be unpublished and cannot be submitted to other journals for consideration from the moment of submission. The evaluation is based on:

  • The articles received will undergo a first review by the editor and the assistant editor of the Journal to verify that: a) the theme of the manuscript fits the focus and scope of the journal, and b) the manuscript complies with the authors’ guidelines established by the journal.
  • The reviewers are chosen from the bank of reviewers that makes up the Scientific Committee of EDUCAR
  • The Journal's review policy is “double-blind”, which means that neither the authors nor the reviewers know the identity of the other party.
  • EDUCAR guarantees anonymity throughout the process of review and evaluation of texts.

EDUCAR follows a peer review system for the evaluation of articles. Once compliance with the formal requirements and adaptation to the thematic interest of the Journal has been verified, the article will be sent for evaluation by two expert reviewers (Scientific Committee), confidentially and anonymously (double-blind), who will issue a report. on the convenience or not of its publication, which will be taken into consideration by the Secretariat. In case of disparate judgments between the two reviewers, the manuscript will be sent to a third reviewer.

Given the reviewers’ reports, the editor and the assistant editor will make one of the following decisions:

  • Accepted. If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the editors will ask the authors to review the printing proofs, giving them one week to make them effective.
  • Accepted with modifications. The revised manuscript can be published conditional on the inclusion of modifications. This must be corrected and returned by the authors to the Journal within a maximum period of 20 days. If necessary, the new version will be sent again to the reviewers, who may reject the article if they consider that it does not meet the quality criteria of the Journal. The authors will receive the evaluation reports from the reviewers, anonymously, so that they can make (if applicable) the appropriate corrections. When a revision of the article is sent, two files must be included: a file in which the authors must mark the changes made in red and a response letter to all the reviewers' comments.
  • Rejected. If the reviewers' assessment reports that the article does not meet the journal's quality criteria, the article will be rejected. The authors will receive comments from the reviewers so that they can improve the proposal and submit it for consideration in a new journal.

6. Contributor agreement and copyright

  • EDUCAR publishes under the Creative Commons license, under the system of “Attribution-Noncommercial” (by-nc) under the following conditions: “You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor, and you may not use the work for commercial purposes”.
  • When the author(s) submits the contribution, the author(s) is signing a publishing agreement. Likewise, and about the contribution, the author(s) are accepting inclusion in the instalments of EDUCAR. This assignment is to be published by EDUCARwithin two years (maximum).
